Wool jackets, leather boots - and some rather strange headgear! Fascinating vintage images reveal what skiing was like more than 80 years ago

fascinating collection of vintage photographs reveal what skiing was like more than 80 years ago. Although skiing had been around for thousands of years as a way of navigating snowy terrain, in the 1920s and 1930s it became a rapidly popular as a sport around the world. The photos, provided courtesy of family history site www.ancestry.co.uk, show how skiers wore simple leather boots strapped to aluminium or wooden skis before the introduction of fibreglass and plastics. Pictured: A man wearing a comical ski outfit in 1938 in Switzerland (left), a group of children in St Moritz in Switzerland (top right) and two young skiers in Hertfordshire, England (bottom right).
